How to Change Careers in Your 30s or 40s (Without Starting Over)

You’ve followed the rules. Built the career. Taken on the responsibilities. Maybe even climbed a ladder or two. And now somewhere in your 30s or 40s something inside you whispers… or maybe it’s shouting:
“This just isn’t it anymore.”
If that’s where you’re at, I want you to know, you’re not alone.
More and more Australians, especially women, are questioning the careers they once worked so hard to build. And it’s no wonder. Midlife often brings with it identity shifts, motherhood, burnout, and a yearning for more purpose.
The beautiful truth? You can transition into a career that lights you up without having to start from scratch.
I’ve been working in career services and occupational rehabilitation since 2009, helping people navigate their way back to work after injury, sometimes reluctantly, and other times with a huge sense of relief.
And something I’ve noticed? Many of the women I’ve worked with, especially those recovering from burnout or workplace bullying, already knew deep down they didn’t want to go back to the same job. Their bodies simply forced them to listen.
So, if you’re sitting with that quiet nudge (or loud cry) to change directions, here’s what I want you to know.

You Don’t Need Permission to Want More
Let’s begin here: It’s okay to want more from your career.
More meaning.
Less exhaustion.
More alignment.
Less pretending.
Midlife career changes can feel terrifying, especially when you feel like you're doing it alone, but I’ve seen just how powerful they can be.
I’ve supported a Police Officer who became a Business Development Manager. A veteran who pivoted into graphic design. A Teacher who became a Lawyer. A Government Executive who went back to study and transitioned into tech.
You’re not “quitting.”You’re realigning with who you’ve become.
I think of a past client, Alissa. She had a stable job in admin, but her heart was in health and wellness. It took courage to honour that pull. She not only transitioned into a role in the health sector but eventually channelled her passion into running for political office. Her values, career, and identity finally matched and most importantly, she had the energy to be the kind of present and joyful mum she wanted to be for her daughter.
You Have More Transferable Skills Than You Think
A common fear I hear is: “But I’ve only ever worked in [insert industry]… I can’t just start over.”
And I get it. But the truth is, you’re not starting from zero. Over the years, you’ve built up a toolkit of powerful, transferable skills. Things like:
Communication and emotional intelligence
Project or time management
Conflict resolution
Stakeholder engagement
People leadership
Client or patient care
Systems, tech, and process knowledge
These skills cross industries. You’d be amazed how much of what you already know can open doors in new spaces.
Focus on What Matters (Not Just What Pays)
In your 30s or 40s, career decisions start to shift. It’s less about chasing titles and more about finding something that aligns with your values and your life. So instead of asking “What job should I do?”
Try asking:
What actually matters to me now?
What kind of energy do I want from my work?
What environments help me thrive?
What am I no longer willing to tolerate?
Back when I was deep in nappies and navigating sleepless nights with my boys, my career priorities looked completely different to what they were in my twenties. I studied in the cracks of time between feeds. I took client calls during nap times. I slowly built a coaching practice from my kitchen table.
My values shaped those decisions... flexibility, impact, family. Yours will shape yours too.
Consider a “Bridge Job” – Not a Big Leap
Not every career change needs to be a bold leap into the unknown. Sometimes it’s a small set, a bridge that gets you closer to where you want to be. Here are a few gentle ways to explore something new:
Move to a similar role, but in a more values-aligned organisation
Take on contract or freelance work to test the waters
Upskill through short courses or mentorship while still working
Volunteer in an area that excites you
One of my clients, an executive manager, discovered her TAFE course didn’t offer formal placements. But she didn’t let that stop her. She organised her own 12-week work experience stint as a Business Analyst. She updated her LinkedIn and was headhunted within weeks. That “bridge job” gave her the clarity and confidence to keep moving forward.
You Don’t Have to Navigate This Alone
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck in analysis paralysis, or just tired of trying to figure it all out on your own, I see you. Sometimes all you need is someone to walk beside you. That’s where coaching comes in.
As a Career and Wellbeing Coach, I help women like you:
Make sense of their career story
Spot blind spots and beliefs that are holding them back
Design a career path that suits this season of life
Move through burnout, self-doubt, and the fear of change
You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need a starting point and someone to help you connect the dots.
“Thanks for your guidance. Not only for LinkedIn but also for realising my value to promote myself. I couldn’t have done this a few months ago.” - Hayley, Client
