AI Can Write Your Resume… But It Can’t Get You the Job

In the work I do with clients, I’m seeing a huge shift.

With the rise of tools like ChatGPT and Copilot, more and more people are using AI to write their cover letters, build their resumes, and even prepare answers for interviews.

And look, I get it.

We are living in an era where information is everywhere. It’s instant, accessible, and incredibly powerful.

But here’s the real issue:

It’s no longer about access to information. It’s about how we use it.

The Problem Isn’t AI, It’s How We’re Using It

I’ve worked with clients who come to me with beautifully polished resumes and cover letters.

On the surface, they look impressive.

But almost instantly, you can tell…

It screams AI.

It’s generic.

It’s overly polished.

It lacks depth and personal voice.

It’s almost like they’ve outsourced part of their thinking, handing over the “heavy lifting” to AI instead of engaging their own conscious intelligence.

And that’s where things start to fall apart.

AI Should Support You, Not Replace You

In my work, I always come back to this: AI is a tool. Not a substitute for you.

Your role is to bring:

  • Your lived experience

  • Your judgement

  • Your ability to think critically and strategically

Then, and only then, should AI come in to:

  • Refine your message

  • Fill in gaps

  • Offer structure or ideas

  • Help you fine-tune

Not lead the entire process.

We Trust AI Too Easily

One of the biggest shifts I’ve noticed is how quickly we’ve started to trust AI, often without question.

We assume the information is correct.

We assume it’s relevant.

We assume it’s “good enough.”

But that’s risky.

If you’ve ever done postgraduate study, you’ll remember this:

You don’t just present information, you validate it.

You:

  • Check your sources

  • Substantiate your claims

  • Ensure it aligns with your goal

That same level of critical thinking needs to be applied when using AI.

Hiring Managers Can Tell

Here’s the truth, a lot of people don’t realise:

Hiring managers can spot AI-generated content.

When something is:

  • Too perfect

  • Too generic

  • Too polished

…it raises questions.

Because what stands out now isn’t perfection.

Its authenticity.

It’s human nuance.

It’s real stories.

It’s personality.

When I work with clients, I’m very clear: If you want ChatGPT to write your resume, go for it.

But just know… That alone won’t get you the job.

Yes, your application may pass through an Applicant Tracking System (ATS). Yes, it might tick the right boxes.

But eventually? It lands in front of a human. And that human is making a decision about…another human.

Let’s Not Forget What Actually Matters

At the end of the day:

  • You are the one doing the job

  • A human is the one hiring you

So your ability to:

  • Think critically

  • Communicate clearly

  • Show who you are

…matters more than ever.

AI can absolutely make your life easier.

But it should never replace: your voice, your judgement, and your thinking.

We’re moving fast as a society.

Technology is evolving rapidly.

But in the job search and hiring space? Human intelligence still leads.

So use AI.

Leverage it.

Let it support you.

But don’t forget to bring "you" into the process.

Because that’s the part no technology can replicate.
