The career wellbeing habit that helps you stay motivated when recognition is hard to find.
When was the last time someone genuinely thanked you for what you do?
Not a generic "good job" or a quick thumbs-up emoji. I mean a heartfelt message from a client, a thoughtful email from a colleague, or feedback that made you stop and think, "Wow. What I do actually matters."
One of the realities of modern work is that much of our contribution goes unseen. We solve problems behind the scenes. We support colleagues quietly. We handle difficult conversations, juggle competing priorities, and keep things moving without anyone necessarily noticing.
A few years ago, I was having one of those weeks where everything felt hard. My caseload was heavy, my inbox was overflowing, and I felt like I was pouring energy into everyone else while running on empty myself.
Then I remember to open my "Why I'm Awesome" folder.
Inside were years of messages from clients thanking me for helping them return to work after injury, find a new career direction, or regain confidence after burnout.
Within minutes, my perspective shifted. Nothing about my workload had changed, but I was reminded that my work mattered.
When work becomes invisible, recognition often disappears with it. Over time, that can chip away at our motivation, confidence, and sense of purpose.
That's why I encourage my clients to create a folder in their inbox called "Why I'm Awesome."
Yes, it's a little cheesy.
And yes, that's exactly the point!
What Is a "Why I'm Awesome" Folder?
It's a simple folder where you save every piece of positive feedback you receive.
A thank-you email from a client.
A message from your manager.
A compliment from a colleague.
A note from a customer.
A successful project outcome.
A business recommendation.
Positive performance reviews.
Testimonials.
Screenshots of messages.
Anything that makes you feel warm, proud, valued, or appreciated.
Whenever something lands in your inbox that reminds you your work has made a difference, save it.
Don't overthink it.
Just file it away.
Why This Matters More Than You Think
Our brains are naturally wired to focus on problems.
We remember the difficult client.
The complaint.
The mistake.
The project that didn't go to plan.
Meanwhile, the positive moments often fade into the background. As a result, many talented professionals develop a distorted view of their own performance and impact.
They forget how many people they've helped.
How many problems they've solved.
How many lives they've influenced.
A "Why I'm Awesome" folder creates a record of reality. Not the story your inner critic tells you on a bad day.
Many women have been taught to be humble, work hard, and let their results speak for themselves.
While humility is valuable, there is a difference between being humble and becoming invisible. Documenting your achievements isn't ego.
It's evidence.
Your Career Will Have "Meh" Days
No matter how much you love your work, there will be days when motivation feels hard to find.
Days when you're tired.
Days when you're overwhelmed.
Days when you're questioning whether any of it really matters.
I've certainly had those days.
As someone who works remotely, I don't have colleagues sitting beside me. I don't have spontaneous chats in the office kitchen. Much of the responsibility for maintaining my motivation and wellbeing falls on me.
I have learned that being your own hype person is not arrogance.
It's self-leadership.
Creating sustainable career wellbeing means having strategies that support you when external validation is absent.
Because sometimes the encouragement you need won't arrive exactly when you need it. That's when your folder can step in.
One of the biggest myths in modern work is that confidence comes before action. In reality, confidence often comes from evidence. A "Why I'm Awesome" folder is simply a collection of evidence, proof that you've helped people, solved problems, overcome challenges and made a meaningful contribution. On the days when your inner critic gets loud, evidence is often more powerful than positive thinking.
Open the Folder and Read the Evidence
On those difficult days, open the folder.
Read through the messages.
Remind yourself of the people you've helped.
The challenges you've overcome.
The impact you've made.
The difference you've created.
HOT TIP:
Your "Why I'm Awesome" folder isn't just good for confidence. It's also one of the best career development tools you can create.
Over time, it becomes a record of achievements, impact and results that can help you update your resume, prepare for interviews, negotiate a promotion, or articulate your value during performance reviews.
A Small Habit With a Big Impact
Career wellbeing isn't always about changing jobs, earning more money, or climbing the next rung of the ladder.
Sometimes it's about creating small habits that help you stay connected to purpose, meaning, and confidence.
A "Why I'm Awesome" folder takes less than five minutes to set up. Yet it can become one of the most valuable resources in your career.
Because on the days when your confidence wobbles, your motivation dips, or your inner critic gets loud, you'll have something powerful waiting for you:
Proof that your work matters.
Proof that you've made a difference.
And proof that you're probably doing a much better job than you think.
So today, create the folder.
Give it a name that makes you smile.
And start collecting the evidence.
Future you will thank you for it.
