If you’ve been telling yourself, “I’m just tired, I’ll be fine after a good night’s sleep,” but that good night’s sleep never actually fixes anything… we need to talk.

Burnout isn’t just about being exhausted. It’s about what happens when your mind, body, and emotions have been in overdrive for too long without enough recovery.

And the tricky part? It sneaks up on high-achieving women because we’re really good at pushing through ... am I right?

Mum resting against a white wall, she's tired, overwhelmed and in burnout.
Burnout isn’t just being tired, it’s when rest no longer refills your tank.

Here are 7 surprising signs you might be closer to burnout than you think:

1. You’re easily irritated or emotional

Snapping at the kids, feeling emotional over nothing, or seething at small things. It’s your nervous system telling you it’s overwhelmed.

2. Your brain feels foggy

Struggling to concentrate, forgetting simple things, re-reading the same sentence three times? This isn’t just “mum brain”, it’s cognitive overload.

3. You feel disconnected from yourself or others

Maybe you’ve lost interest in things you used to love, or you feel numb even when you "should" feel happy. Burnout dulls your emotional range.

4. Everything feels like too much effort

Even small tasks, booking a doctor’s appointment, folding the laundry ... feel exhausting.

5. You keep getting sick or rundown

A stressed body is a run-down immune system. If you catch every cold going around, take notice.

6. You're Confidence Has Taken a Hit

You start second-guessing your abilities, doubting your worth, and worrying you’re falling behind. I’ve seen this countless times with clients who are brilliant at what they do, but burnout clouds their self-belief.

Bec, one of my coaching clients, shared that after a disappointing experience with a previous career coach, she was hesitant to try again. But in her words, “From our very first session, [Merly] was a breath of fresh air: compassionate, insightful, and genuinely invested in my success.”

Burnout had shaken her confidence, but with the right support and strategies, she was able to rebuild it and transition into a new career field she now feels genuinely confident about.

7. You’re running on autopilot

Life feels like a to-do list you’re rushing through, rather than something you’re actually experiencing.

As a fellow working mum who's gone through burnout, you don’t have to wait until you’re at breaking point to do something about it. Burnout recovery is so much easier when you catch it early.

Try this today:

Pick one thing on your to-do list this week that you can either delegate, delay, or delete. Yes, even if it feels uncomfortable!!

And if you’re nodding along thinking “Yep, that’s me,” then you already know you can’t “sleep this off.”

You need a plan that supports your energy, boundaries, and joy without burning everything down to start again.

Feeling burnt out or overwhelmed?
